The US garment industry lobbied Mr. Biden to send more vaccines to Vietnam

In a letter sent on July 27, the American Apparel and Footwear Association called on the administration of President Joe Biden to provide more aid for a Covid-19 vaccine for Vietnam, according to Nikkei Asia.

In addition, the association also hopes that the Vietnamese government will consider vaccinating workers in the garment and footwear sectors.

"The practical support from the Vietnamese government for workers in the garment and footwear industry will help us have a basis to request the US government to speed up the aid. Succeed in our garment industry. I directly depend on the health of this industry in Vietnam," said the association's chairman, Mr. Steve Lamar.

The American Apparel and Footwear Association represents many of the big names in the field of footwear and clothing manufacturing such as Gap, Adidas, Nike and other major fashion brands.

Recently, the production activities of these companies have been affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.

Suppliers in Vietnam contribute 50% of global footwear output in 2020. Experts say that if production in Vietnam is disrupted, the entire supply will be affected, according to Nikkei Asia .

Up to now, the US has aided Vietnam with more than 5 million doses of Moderna vaccine, out of a total of 23 million doses for 20 countries and territories in Asia.

The above vaccines are part of a total of 80 million doses that US President Joe Biden has committed to provide to meet global vaccination demand.

The White House affirmed that the US provides vaccines to partners without any conditions.
